What does an electrical panel do?

Your panel is the control centre for every circuit in your home. It takes incoming power from the utility line and distributes it safely to your outlets, appliances, and fixtures through individual breakers. Older homes were often built with 60-amp or 100-amp service, which was fine for a house with a fridge and a few lamps — not for a modern home running EV chargers, central air, induction cooktops, and a home office full of electronics at the same time.

5 signs you need a panel upgrade

1. Breakers trip frequently. An occasional trip during a power surge is normal. Tripping every week means your panel is regularly hitting its limit.

2. Flickering or dimming lights. If lights dim whenever a larger appliance turns on, your panel is struggling to distribute power evenly.

3. You’re still on a fuse box. Fuse boxes are outdated, harder to insure, and don’t meet current Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) standards in Ontario.

4. You’re adding an EV charger, hot tub, or major renovation. Level 2 EV chargers alone can draw as much power as a small home. A 100-amp panel often can’t support one alongside everything else.

5. Your home insurance provider is asking about it. Many Ontario insurers now flag homes with panels under 100 amps or with known problem brands (like certain Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels) as a liability risk.

How much does a panel upgrade cost in the GTA?

Pricing depends on your current setup, the size of upgrade (typically moving to 100-amp or 200-amp service), and whether the utility connection itself needs work. As a general range, most residential upgrades in the Greater Toronto Area fall between $2,500 and $4,500, with larger homes, detached garages, or complex panel relocations running higher. What does the process actually involve?

1. Assessment. A licensed ACS electrician inspects your current panel, wiring condition, and load requirements.
2. Permit and utility coordination. In Ontario, panel upgrades require an ESA permit, and your electrician typically coordinates any needed shutdown with the utility company.
3. Installation. The old panel is removed and replaced, circuits are reconnected and labeled, and everything is tested.
4. Inspection. The ESA inspects the completed work to confirm it meets code.

Most straightforward residential upgrades are completed in a single day, though you should expect a scheduled power outage of a few hours during the swap.
